  • Outline

  • ‘Gukhak’ is the educational institute in the era of Silla, which is equivalent to today’s national universities.
Gukhak was built in the second year of King Shinmun (682), in which today’s Gyeongju Hyanggyo is
situated. It evolved into the Hyanghak in the era of Goryeo, and Hyanggyo in the era of the Choseon
Dynasty, with a long well-established tradition as a place of higher learning. It is the largest in scale in
the North Gyeongsang province, an exemplar in building arrangement of Hyanggyo alongside Naju Hyanggyo.
